Professor Geoff Nicholson joined UQ Rural Clinical School in 2011 as the Director of Research, moved to the position of Head of the Rural Clinical School School in October 2011. Since 2015 he has been a part-time Professorial Research Fellow. Prior to joining The University of Queensland, he was with The University of Melbourne at The Geelong Hospital where he established a productive multidisciplinary academic department, and a regional endocrinology service.

Professor Nicholson’s research areas include Indigenous health, mental health, osteoporosis, diabetes, cell biology, epidemiology, clinical research and research translation, with particular interest in diseases of bone and metabolism.

Research Impacts

Professor Nicholson is a senior academic physician-researcher who is internationally recognised for his multidisciplinary outputs in clinical research, epidemiology and research translation. He has been an investigator on more than 80 RCTs. He is the instigator of and Senior Investigator on the Geelong Osteoporosis Study (GOS), which has evolved to encompass other disciplines including mental health, obesity and metabolism, diabetes, arthritis, gastroenterology, and infectious disease.
